Stanroy Music Center Celebrates 60 Years

It started in 1947, what would eventually become a Sonoma County institution, when Stan Goldman and business partner Roy Chilton opened Stanroy Music Center in downtown Santa Rosa.  Originally featuring a wide range of musical products including phonographs, records and sheet music, Stanroy Music eventually phased out their record and phonograph departments to focus almost entirely on the needs of the area’s professional and aspiring musicians.  After purchasing Roy’s share of the business two years later, Stan retained sole ownership until his retirement in 1980.

Tupper & Reed, Inc., the venerable East Bay music company founded in 1906, purchased Stanroy Music from Stan in 1980, establishing its presence in a thriving Sonoma County music scene.  Under the continued direction of owner Wayne Anderson, Stanroy Music Center enters its 60th year of business in Santa Rosa.  The facilities at the 4th St. location continue to expand, supporting nearly 30 teachers, 5 repairmen and a gigantic collection of instruments and sheet music of all types.  Stanroy is truly one of the last full-line music stores in Northern California.

The face of music has changed dramatically since 1947, but the nature of music and its role in the lives of musicians and their audiences is unchanged.  For 60 years, Stanroy Music Center has provided its indispensable services to generations of Sonoma County musicians, helping them to discover, enjoy and perfect the precious gift of music.
